Open the Network And Dial-Up Connections window. 2. Click the Local Area Connection icon, and then select Properties. 3. In the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box, click Install. 4. In the Select Network Component Type dialog box, select a network component type, and then click Add. 5. In the Select Network Protocol dialog box, select a component to install, and then click OK.9Removing a Windows 2000 Networking Component To remove a Windows 2000 networking component: 1. Open the Network And Dial-Up Connections window. 2. Right-click the Local Area Connection icon, and then select Properties. 3. In the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box, select an installed component from the component list. 4. Click Uninstall. 10Accessing the TCP/IP Client Configuration Interface To open the TCP/IP client configuration interface: 1. In the Start menu's Settings group, select Network And Dial-Up Connections to display the Network And Dial-Up Connections window. 2. Right-click the Local Area Connection icon in the Network And Dial-Up Connections window, and then select Properties to display the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box. 3. Select the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) module in the components list, and then click Properties to display the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box. 11Basic TCP/IP Client Configuration Parameters IP addressSubnet maskDefault gatewayDomain Name System (DNS) server address 12IP Address Identifies the computer to the networkRequired for TCP/IP communicationMust be unique on the networkMust not be chosen at randomMust be assigned by a network administrator 13Other TCP/IP Parameters ParameterFunctionSubnet maskIndicates which Internet Protocol (IP) address bits identify the network and which identify the hostRequired for TCP/IP communication Default gatewayIdentifies the router that the computer should use to access other networks DNS server addressesIdentifies the DNS servers that the client will use to resolve host and domain names into IP addresses 14Opening the Advanced TCP/IP Configuration Interface To open the advanced TCP/IP configuration interface:  1. Open the Network And Dial-Up Connections window. 2. Open the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box. 3. Open the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box. 4. Click Advanced to display the Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box. 15Configuring Advanced TCP/IP Parameters You can specify the following in the Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box: Multiple IP addressesMultiple default gatewaysMultiple DNS serversDNS suffix settingsWindows Internet Name Service (WINS) server addressesIP Security (IPsec)TCP/IP filtering16Chapter Summary Use the Network And Dial-Up Connections window to manually install and configure the basic Windows 2000 networking components.Use the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box of a network interface adapter to install, remove, and configure the TCP/IP networking components for that specific network interface adapter.Use the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box to configure basic and advanced TCP/IP properties.The basic TCP/IP properties are IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS server address.The advanced TCP/IP properties are multiple IP addresses, multiple default gateways, DNS options, WINS server addresses, and TCP/IP options. 17
